I am not 18 but will be before election day, register me to vote!

The Sixty-first Amendment of the Constitution of Bharat, officially known as The Constitution (Sixty-first Amendment) Act, 1988, lowered the voting age of elections to the Lok Sabha and to the Legislative Assemblies of States from 21 years to 18 years. This was done by amending Article 326 of the Constitution, which concerns to elections to the Lok Sabha and the Assemblies.

Bharat is the second most populated nation in the world. Since 1993, the election commission is still experimenting to find ways to have maximum voter turnout in elections.

Election process is not unified in Bharat (if “You” are a member of “X” constituency, you could vote only from the same constituency on the particular date and you cannot exercise your right for X from Y or Z). Imagine how many Indians stay out of their towns, states and also in other countries. For the matter of a vote, not many would readily spend hundreds and thousands to travel.

Also, the election commission is struggling to give a right to vote to adults who turn 18 by Election Day (if your proof of date of birth says that you shall be 18 years before election day than your voter registration application form should be accepted and you shall be given a voter Id).

Or else citizens are denied to exercise their right to vote till next election; which ideally means that he/she casts their first vote in Lok Sabha/State Assembly elections at the age of 23…

Therefore, this process infringes a fundamental right to vote at the age of 18!
